This post is from our volunteer Cheryl, End-of-Life Doula:
Outside the snow is coming down hard on the third day of April making it a challenge to drive in for volunteering, yet the warmth inside the Oasis makes it all worthwhile. With Country Hymn music playing on Pandora, the door opened up for us to have a heart-to-heart conversation about death while I polished her fingernails, the perfect shade of peony pink. “Oh I am ready anytime, she said. I’ve had a very good life and I’m at peace with dying. I’ve had 61 wonderful years with my husband. I told him after I’m gone, he can find another women if it’s right for him.” On my iPhone Johnny Cash is singing, “Daddy Sang Bass”, as we continue to talk about death and life. Her nails get two coats of peony pink and a top clear coat. When I’m all done polishing her nails she says, “I have good friends and you’re one of them. And you know, I just love you!” Oh…. what sweet music to my ears from a sweet soul with a grateful heart.
